At the joint statement event, India and Germany signed two landmark agreements: a Critical Minerals and Semiconductor Intent Agreement and a Declaration of Intent on Defence Industrial Cooperation. These pacts underscore the nations’ commitment to deepening collaboration in technology, manufacturing, and security. Modi emphasized that expanding defence and security cooperation reflects “mutual trust and shared vision,” while thanking Merz for simplifying defence trade procedures.
The leaders also announced the creation of an India–Germany Centre of Excellence in Renewable Energy, reinforcing shared priorities in sustainability. Modi noted that bilateral trade has reached a record high of over $50 billion, giving new momentum to the strategic partnership. He highlighted upcoming milestones: 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2026 and 25 years of strategic partnership completed last year.
Merz stressed that cooperation between India and Germany is vital amid global geopolitical and economic uncertainty, particularly with challenges posed by the United States and China. He also condemned Iran’s “disproportionate and brutal violence” against protesters, calling it a sign of weakness.
Merz’s two‑day India visit precedes a planned EU–India summit, where negotiations continue on a free trade agreement, further cementing India’s role in Europe’s strategic outlook. SOURCE: NEWS 18
