Varanasi, recognized as the spiritual capital of India, has experienced a remarkable surge in tourism over the past three years, attracting both domestic and international visitors to the ancient city in unprecedented numbers.
Official statistics from the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department and the Ministry of Tourism indicate that more than 11 crore tourists visited Kashi in 2024, marking an 18.7 percent increase compared to the previous year. This significant growth has positioned Varanasi among the leading tourism destinations in India, outpacing well-known coastal and hill locations such as Goa and Shimla in terms of visitor count.
Tourism officials attribute this extraordinary expansion to a combination of cultural revitalization and extensive infrastructure development. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, which was inaugurated in 2021, has not only improved the spiritual experience for pilgrims but has also transformed the city’s landscape with modern amenities. Varanasi, alongside Ayodhya, Mathura, and Prayagraj, is emerging as part of a "religious tourism triangle" that attracts visitors throughout the year.
