| Railway tracks with solar panels |
As India is moving towards sustainability, there is a greater move adopted by Indian Railways to meet the net zero emission goal by adapting solar panels on railway tracks to adapt a move towards greener and sustainable transport. Varanasi has become the first city to have portable solar panels between railway tracks.
In order to put solar panels between the rails without interfering with train traffic, BLW has launched this trial project in its workshop line number 19. The installation process was created locally. According to a statement from the railways, "These solar panels are not only long-lasting and effective, but they can also be removed for maintenance and seasonal adaptation."
Indian Railways has 1.2 lakh kilometers of track. The railroads can place solar panels between the tracks by using the yard lines. Since solar panels are installed in the spaces between tracks, no land acquisition is necessary for this plan. According to a release, this program has the capacity to produce 3.50 lakh units annually per kilometer.
Though it will have some setbacks that need to be addressed, such as breaking of solar panels, theft of solar panels, cleaning of solar panels, and cleaning of human waste and excretion. Instead of putting solar panels on tracks, they could have been placed above trains to avoid such instances.
