Vehicles that have exceeded their life years, that is, 10 years for diesel vehicles and 15 years for petrol vehicles, will now not run or be fueled from today in Delhi.
Air pollution in Delhi has always been a major cause of health issues. This is not only because of vehicles, but also there was a contribution from the unhealthy environment and the building of apartments, fewer green spaces, etc. This plan was walked out by the transport department, involving its personnel from the organization along with Delhi belief police and the municipal corporation of Delhi. There will be police officers posted at each of the identified petrol pumps to monitor and prevent the refueling of such vehicles. This is a major step to curb vehicle pollution, and it is starting on Tuesday, July 1. This is according to the direction of the Commission for Air Quality Management to curb the pollution, as last year the air quality index was so bad that it was becoming hazardous for people to live and breathe. Violators will face immediate vehicle impoundment or a fine of up to 10,000 rupees for four-wheelers or 5,000 for two-wheelers.
The air pollution in Delhi also affects the nearby district. And there was the survey held by the US-based Help Effects Institute. There were 7000 world cities included in that survey, and Delhi was found to be the most harmful of any major cities in the world. It is also believed that breathing air in Delhi is equal to smoking 10 times a day. So the air pollution in India is estimated to kill about two Indian people every year and has become the fifth largest cause of death in India. The list of diseases due to pollution includes chronic respiratory diseases and asthma, according to the World Health Organization. In 2019, the Supreme Court of India expressed its sentiments on the pollution of Delhi, saying Delhi has become worse than narak. This report is of the year 2019. During COVID-19there was significant improvement in air quality because of lockdown. Last year the air quality index of Delhi went to around 491, which is hazardous. There can be several factors affecting that: Vijayadashami, Diwali, stubble burning, road dust, vehicle pollution, and cold weather.
Because of poor air quality, motor vehicle emissions are one of the highest contributing factors in air pollution. These have effects on children and adults, and this results in more lower immune system cancer. epilepsy, diabetes, headache, fatigue, lung cancer, early death, etc. The measures taken by the government were that schools remained shut, no construction took place, and diesel generators were banned in Bahadurpur. The power plant was shut down for a few days, water sprinkling was started on the roads, work from home was initiated, etc. Earlier, the Supreme Court in 2018 and the NGT in 2015 issued a ban on diesel and petrol. This will also necessitate the retirement of aged vehicles and promote electronic vehicles as the future.
This step taken in 2025 for control of air pollution due to vehicles has effects on families of the middle class and lower middle class, as many families rely on these vehicles, which are now banned. They were used for transportingchildren or for shopping or for making short trips, but without them, life will not be easy, and without any government funds for new vehicles, it can disturb the daily life schedule. Buses or metros are limited to peripheral areas, and they will have high travel costs and inconveniences because of the sudden ban. There can be a financial burden on the families related to the expense of buying a new vehicle.
The fuel ban for end-of-life vehicles in Delhi from today will also be monitored by the traffic personnel to impound the vehicle or issue a challan to the owner of the EOL vehicle. According to the SOP, a few stations must display assigned statements that fuel will not be dispensed to end-of-life vehicles that are 15 years old for petrol and CNG and 10 years old for diesel. The automated camera system will work at the filling station to capture and display the registration details of the vehicle in real time, full stop. Fuel stations that violate any rules will be reported weekly to the CAQ and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for the reactions.
