A few weeks ago, while searching for my scrapbook, I found a letter. It was not from a friend or from a mentor or any close one, but it was from myself. I had written this letter when I was in 5th grade. I am talking about approximately 10 years back. In that letter I found my goals, my ambitions, and my tiny victory and questions like, Did you open an art club, or did you start writing stories? Did you open a dance academy? Did you start writing a blog?.
That moment reminded me why I write those letters to myself. These letters were not like journal writing, but it was something that I wanted to build for myself. These letters also suggested the version that might be lost in today's era, or they also suggested how the world has taken a fast move where we have left writing to yourself for your peace and your satisfaction. The new version of a human has taken place in a raw, dishonest, and hopeful life, which also lost its beauty, glow, bloom, etc.
I remember being a kid when we started using B612 or Picture Perfect for filtered photos with catchy and cool captions for your Facebook profile. I think this is the only technology and platform that we have not switched yet. We still take filtered photos and type captions that are cool and trendy in an unfiltered way. How often do we sit and say, Hi, dear future? I know there are many ups and downs in your life, but I am proud that you keep moving on and smile every day.
In today's pressure-packed life, we have seen people meeting deadlines in reality with social media persistence and stairs built of anxiety. But there are many negative versions of a human life that could be related to job placements. For those who are facing rejection or success, we should not forget to remind them that it's okay to not have it all figured out at one go. A new version of the college graduate who did write a letter to herself before graduating and Reddit after her successful career and marriage, and she thought about how far she had come from being that scared, confused, and silent girl from school. And a very recent example of Covid-19 is where people, not all but some, did write letters to their loved ones whom they cannot meet in the hospital or the ones they have lost. It was okay to write letters about their fear and family bonding and desire to hug them and claim that sometimes it's okay to not be okay.
Writing these letters to yourself is not only about getting the answer; it's for seeing your growth and searching for your strengths and weaknesses you have gained in these running years. This will give you a realization of how silly, soft, stubborn, emotional, and careful you used to be and how much distance you have covered. Writing for your future self is more a kind of reflection of change. It's nature itself where you believe you meet and work more to achieve the heights you want with kindness. So always write a letter to yourself reminding you of your dreams, doubts, and joys. When you open these letters after years, you will be able to feel proud of yourself, and you can even be an example for a society of how to be a happy person or a sad but strong and independent person in your life.
Writing to yourself is an act of self-trust; you believe there is a version of you strong and independent enough to read it.
